June/May

Week Beginning 25th May

Pretty quiet really just getting used to actually having time to do nothing… getting pretty bored already actually!

At least the sunshine’s out to play so soaking up the sun in the backgarden, with spotify on, making decisions for the dissertation and as always setting myself “the summer list” of things to do. Normally aims etc of stuff I want to achieve.

Just enjoying some me time before I know it with a little over time at Primark to mix things up its Friday again

So my mate Danni invites me to a BBQ with some friends of ours before a night out in downtown “Wigan”

Spotify…

I’ve finally sussed how to download it to my mac, woo hoo music at my fingertips.

Something to keep forever!

So after the D&AD lecture I just went up to the office to speak to Liz, when she told me “Christmas” had come early. Ian Anderson has sent the people involved with his workshop a gift.

3D --> 2D

The Designers Republic’s Adventures in and out of architecture with Sadar Vuga Arhitekti & Spela Mlakar.

It’s a gorgeous, gorgeous book signed by Ian himself. It was a real shock to get something for our efforts to his brief but a nice touch! Cheers Ian!

21st May

Luke Williamson

D&AD President’s Lectures

I was shocked that there wasn’t more of us really…

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The IT Crowd

The morning after our night out Belles new series of the IT Crowd dropped through the letterbox… which was really strange as we’d only been discussing the titles of the other series over a brew in the early hours after sex with robots, absolute genius in the making, each series gets a little more spectacular!

After the lecture Adam had a BBQ for his housemate… it was abit of a washout due to the weather but we continued the spirit of the “party” into the night at the roadhouse “Sex with Robots” a full on electro night, which was brilliant!

18th May

So here it is the moment I’ve been waiting for my Glastonbury ticket! It arrived in the post this morning myself and Laura went to Manchester and “did lunch darling” in Pizza Express. Student beans, got us money off, one to remember for third year making the most of being a student for the last year!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

16th May

A full weekend in the lovely Primark to pay for basics for Glastonbury. But… the penny blacks, a local band from Wigan, who of which the members formed at university where playing there last ever gig. So myself and my friends went down to support them one last time. Our weekly night spot “Club Nirvana” hosts some amazing “indie” bands including Arctic Monkeys, Dj sets from artists and then always supporting local bands trying to make a name for themselves.

15th May

So a few nights out later… I got to work on sending a sneak peak of my portfolio to Mr Ian Anderson of Designers Republic. After producing and gaining a place on his 2 day workshop I have kept in contact with Ian. He requested to see some of my other design work and offered me a placement based on my attitude and approach. The date of 8th June was marked on the calendar to go up to Sheffield and have a formal portfolio interview. JOB WELL DONE!

May; has being all about early mornings, annotation, sketchbooks, the journal, final deadline, late nights, drunk nights, awesome times, memory loss, work experience, sunshine, football, bbq’s and answers J

So final deadline and presentation on 11th May marked the end of the second year, which I have to say for me marked the end of a successful term in the amount and quality of my work. I’d much preferred the second term to the first. Though at the time the autumn term I felt I’d produced some decent work, though now with what ive learn’t this term I feel myself as a designer has developed!

My favourite project for the term would be the box set of books for the futureshock series. Within the term many guest speakers including Matt Pyke (whom I’ll mention more later) and Jonathan Barnbrook have influenced and inspired me as a designer. Sadly due to lateness of public transport I missed the Barnbrook lecture yet looking at his website I couldn’t help but notice the similar approach I’d logically taken with my bookcovers. What I found reassuring with feedback from third parties like Love Creative. They made comments about the projects I was most proud of like my bookcovers and music visuals, where I was more in my “own” style.

Overall happy with my performance and commitment to the course.

“Jacqueline Williams a sunny afternoon sat in the park with the gang drinking was just what the doctor ordered! Minus her 2 hour “power nap” at 4 this morning I’ve been up 48 hours result… 2nd term complete on time and the presentation done and dusted HELLO BED!! Shopping, satans Tuesday and course night out Wednesday”
